Every now and then I’m introduced to something that really catches my attention. Whether it’s a potential new trend within the Japanese music space or the evolution of a current one, it’s all very down my alley. So when the latest number from Japanese musician 4s4ki (read Asaki) popped into my inbox, I was definitely intrigued. In particular, it was her latest single “Chouhametsutekishikou” that was being shared, a cut from 4s4ki’s upcoming “NEMNEM” EP with a full music video that can be streamed below:
Sonically 4s4ki’s latest feels like the appropriate evolution of artists such as DAOKO in the space of electronic-backed rap music with a pop-tinged flavor to it. She’s still a relatively new face in the ever-evolving music landscape, getting her start in the early months of 2018, but already she’s making several promising moves that could position her for a much broader audience. Her music also finds itself tightly integrated into Tokyo’s club music scene, with prominent remixes from the likes of andrew from TREKKIE TRAX, 食品まつり a.k.a foodman, and more.
Set to release on July 10, 2019, 4s4ki’s upcoming “NEMNEM” EP features a total of five songs, all produced by ANIMAL HACK, including a collaboration with Itsuka of charisma.com fame. The full tracklist for the EP can be seen below:
1.超破滅的思考
2.innocence
3.幻 feat.いつか(Charisma.com)
4.許
5.SAD night boi
