Included in the most recent Animal Crossing: New Horizons update was a number of new holiday events, the second of which occurs from May 1st-7th. This limited-time May Day event is in relation to the international holiday that celebrates workers of all kinds.
May Day Island Tour
In New Horizons a new in-game event to celebrate May Day was created and is by far the most unique yet. From May 1st-7th if you visit your resident services building and speak with Tom Nook he’ll give you a “May Day Ticket” that you can redeem at the airport on your island.
This May Day Ticket takes you to a special island tour containing a maze that has a special prize & surprise visitor at the end. If you complete it perfectly you’ll also be rewarded with bonus Bell Vouchers to take back to your island with you! The catch is, you don’t get to bring any tools or materials with you to this island and you’ll need to solve everything with the resources on the island.
Don’t worry though, if you get stuck or don’t manage to get all of the items on the island you can call Rescue Services and they’ll reset the island for you so you can try again! Be sure not to leave the island until you get everything because you won’t be able to come back.
How To Clear the Maze
We’ve created a step by step guide on how to make your way through the maze in such a way that you’ll get every item on the island. Stop reading now if you’d like to solve it for yourself.
Step One: Pick up the shovel and dig up the shrub to your left to pick up your first apple.
Step Two: Eat the apple and dig up the tree blocking the path.
Step Three: Go straight and jump over the two gaps in front of you, follow the path until you meet a right turn in the path.
Step Four: Turn right down that path, follow it around the corner, and pick up your first stick.
Step Five: Continue along the path and jump over 2 more gaps, this will bring you to a path that has 3 gaps blocking areas containing a stone, some sticks, and a worn axe. Pick them all up.
Step Six: Go back down the path that led you here to where you found your first stick, cut down the tree at the end of that row, and pick up a stick and 2 apples.
Step Seven: Return to the 3 gaps where you got the worn axe, jump over the leftmost gap, and follow that path (jumping over a 2nd gap) until you’re stopped by a rock.
Step Eight: Eat an apple and break the rock, pick up the iron you find there and turn back along the path that led you here.
Step Nine: Return to the first path you ran down and turn at the right path this time, follow it until you find 3 pieces of wood. Pick them up.
Step Ten: Continue down that path until you find a rock, eat an apple and break the rock. Pick up the apple on the other side.
Step Eleven: Eat another apple and dig up the tree to access a crafting table. Pick up the 2 recipes there if you need them (flimsy axe & axe), craft an axe.
Step Twelve: Turn back and take the first left path, jump over the 3 gaps until you reach a tree. Cut it down with your axe, climb over the stump, and pick up 2 apples.
Step Thirteen: Make your way back to where you picked up the iron and cut down the tree at the end of that path.
Step Fourteen: Follow the path, picking up an apple along the way, and cut down three trees. Make sure to climb over the stumps instead of digging them up as you progress.
Step Fifteen: You’ve made it to the end! Dig up the shrub and collect 4 Bell Vouchers, then talk to Rover to collect his Briefcase.
BONUS: Behind the tree in Rover’s area there are 3 shrubs, dig them up and follow along the beach to the left until you’re on the front of the island. Eat the 3 apples you should have left and break the rocks you find to collect 5 more Bell Vouchers. Then dig up the shrubs there to make your way back to the dock to return home.
Who is Rover?
If you’re new to the Animal Crossing franchise Rover is going to be a new face to you, longtime fans will know him as the first animal you encounter in previous games though. He played a major role in all previous releases as the point in the game where you select all of your player information before arriving at your town. Although the interactions with him in previous games were quite short, he’s always been something of a fan favorite.
In New Horizons this is the only way to encounter him as of now, but as you speak to him he implies that you’ll be seeing him again down the line. I’m sure we’ll see more of the island maze tours in the future as well, so it’s a safe bet he’ll be a part of that. Either way, it’s always great to see old friends!
Later in May a celebration for International Museum Day will appear in the game in the form of a stamp rally! This event starts on May 18th and runs until May 31st, we don’t know what the prize for this event is just yet but Stamp Rallies are a pretty common thing in Japan so we already have an idea of how this event will work. Although it’s probably wishful thinking, it would be really fun if they added some kind of multiplayer component to the rally that encourages visiting other islands. We’ll just have to wait and see!
