Animal Crossing: New Horizons Summer Update Wave 1 Adds Swimming, and a Friend From Previous Games

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Summer Update Wave 1

With the June Wedding Season event ending in less than a week, we’ve been expecting word of a new update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons to come any day now. Well, that day just so happens to be today as Nintendo has announced the next update drops on July 3rd and will be adding new ways for you to explore your island!

The first, and obviously biggest, announcement for this new update is that swimming & diving is returning to the series with this update. Previously featured in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the feature has been missing in the latest title until now. Along with the ability to explore the sea around your island, you can now find new sea creatures to donate to the museum.

In addition to the swimming/diving, Pascal the sea otter will be making a return to the franchise! Originally debuting in Animal Crossing: Wild World, Pascal was a visitor to your town who would impart you with some wise thoughts and special ship or nautical themed furniture. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf he would appear when you found a scallop while diving and would ask you to trade it for a piece of pirate-themed furniture along with his typical wisdom. The trailer mentions that you can get new DIY Recipes, this time showing off the mermaid-themed set (which has not been available in-game previously), but doesn’t specify that it’s the only kind you can get from him.

The trailer also teases a new Gulliver appearance event, this time appearing to be pirate-themed. There are no specific details given, but maybe this is how they’re making the pirate-themed furniture available?

They close things out with the announcement that another summer update is due in early August, so it appears like we should be looking forward to a busy summer!
