Toy manufacturer Bandai announced today that they will be selling a life-sized, robotic Detective Pikachu plush through their shop MegaHouse. The plush doll is roughly 16 inches tall, featuring mechanical internals that allow it to come to life and be your very own friend Detective Pikachu. They’ve given him a fairly wide range of movement, with ears that can flop up and down, eyes that can slightly change expression, and arms that can wave around. Oh, and not to forget the fuzzy tail that can wag back and forth. The ears and arms are said to have an especially wide range of motion for a variety of poses. With the massive amount of popularity that the recent Detective Pikachu movie has been raking in, this is certainly one for the enthusiasts.
Seeing this little guy being brought to life reminds me a lot of the slightly creepy mechanical “I Choose You Pikachu” toy that me and a lot of other kids owned when we were young. You know, the one with the light up cheeks that would say “Pika, pika…” in the middle of the night for no reason.
However, it looks like significant improvements have been made to the design of this robotic Detective Pikachu. For one, his mouth is affixed in the iconic “:3” face, something I can never get enough of. Pikachu’s features are all proportionate and he looks like a regular plush toy at first glance. He looks so important with his signature little Detective Pikachu hat.
Pre-orders for this little guy are open from May 25 until this August on the MegaHouse website. He’s scheduled to ship out some time at the end of December later this year. They’ve put a limit of 3 on the amount that one customer buy at a time, likely in order to discourage people from reselling this exclusive item.
