Look. I love Digimon. I really really love Digimon. I can confidently tell you Digimon Adventure is the best children’s anime of them all and to see that series get a final send-off like this after Digimon Adventure Tri makes me so happy that stayed in it this long. If you weren’t aware, a Digimon Adventure movie where the Digi-destined are now full-fledged adults has been in the works for a while. Finally, we have a trailer for Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna and if you’re me, you’re going to shed a tear or three. It opens on February 21, 2020 in Japan.
If Agumon asking Tai if they’ll stay together when he grows up doesn’t grab at your heartstrings, I don’t know what will. Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna continues the path that Digimon Adventure Tri started; namely aging the characters and making the world grow up with its viewer. This film, while probably child-friendly, won’t be for kids now. It’ll be for everybody that grew up with the series. That was the genius of Tri, It was the Digimon fanfiction everyone wrote and read their first year of high school and this will be its post-college graduation send-off. Tai and Agumon’s last adventure.
Digimon had a rocky latter 00s especially in the west but it seems the franchise has new life. Not only has Toei been smart enough to return to Digimon Adventure in a way that actually treads new territory while still remaining true to its roots, but various Digimon games like Digimon Cybersleuth and the upcoming Digimon Survive have also been coming out Stateside for the first time in years. It’ll be hard for the series to acquire brand new fans but hopefully, these new entries will all catch the eyes of people who used to love the show despite it being a ‘rip off’ of another children’s monster brand.
Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna comes out February 21, 2020.
