The 40th-anniversary shenanigans for the original Mobile Suit Gundam just don’t stop. We’ve had special Gundam coffee, a line of awesome shirts at Uniqlo, and the proclamation that a Gundam would be sent into space. The fanfare all makes sense considering just how important Gundam is in Japan. 40 years strong and the franchise shows no sign of slowing down, with a whole lot of Gundam anime and a Hollywood movie coming down the pipeline. The newest happening is the announcement of the mobile game GUNDAM BATTLE: GUNPLA WARFARE, or Gundam Breaker Mobile in Japan. Coming this summer, it’ll be the first time an official mobile game from the series that has been released in North America.
Now, we know not everybody too big on mobile games but GUNDAM BATTLE: GUNPLA WARFARE really looks like it’s doing justice for series fans. Featuring mobile suits and characters from more than 25 different series, the variety and representation are on point. Whether you’re a Universal Century only type, a Gundam Wing nostalgic, or fell for Iron-Blooded Orphans, you’ll be covered. Being based on Gunpla specifically, you’ll be able to mix and match your favorite mobile suits. Imagine, Ramba Ral’s classic blue Gouf with Wing Zero’s feathered wings from Endless Waltz.
The game-play looks pretty satisfying too. This trailer uses the phrase ‘simple intuitive controls’ and while that’ll remain to be seen, it does look pretty approachable. You boost up to enemy robots and attack attack attack. There’s also a very Gundam Build Fighters type story where the player is part of a school Gunpla club and they have to participate in Gunpla fights to keep their club from being shut down. Honestly, Gunpla Warfare sounds like a delight for those who don’t have access to Gundam models but still want to take part in the fun.
