The original Gundam: Reconguista In G was something of a critical failure. Despite it being the grand return of Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino to the franchise after not making a new series since Turn A Gundam, fans and critics were both disappointed. At the time, people cited the show’s old-school dialogue and convoluted plot elements just not making sense for today’s Gundam audience. However, Tomino’s decided not to give this one up as he’s now returning to Reconguista In G with this 5 film compilation. The first film in the series, Gundam: Reconguista In G The Movie I: Go! Core Fighter had a preview screening at a Tomino exhibit over the weekend and also dropped a new trailer.
This trailer for Gundam: Reconguista In G The Movie I: Go! Core Fighter offers a look into some of the touched up animation and re-recorded voices. Yoshiyuki Tomino has, in the past, directed compilation films for the original Mobile Suit Gundam and Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, although those were three films each out of 40-50 episodes shows. Five films out of the 26 episode Gundam: Reconguista In G? There better be some new content in there to justify this series that smoothes out some of its less desirable elements. That said, I think this trailer looks promising.
I’ll admit, I’m somewhat of a Gundam: Reconguista In G apologist. I don’t disagree with the common criticisms about its writing and story but I think other elements made the original show worth watching. One, I really love the design of the G-Reco; it’s just Gundam enough that it doesn’t seem completely out of place but its rounded elements and color palette really differentiates it. That G-Reco was hand-animated for the near-entirety of the original series. Between it and Kenichi Yoshida of Eureka Seven’s character designs, the show was a marvel to look at and the characters had some charm underneath their wordy writing too. With the touched up and rerecorded script, I hope Gundam: Reconguista In G The Movie I: Go! Core Fighter and the rest of the films can unearth Reconguista’s true appeal.
Gundam: Reconguista In G The Movie I: Go! Core Fighter will screen across Japan on November 29.
