If you’re based in the United States, you really should through a subscribe onto the Gundam.Info YouTube channel. No, this isn’t a piece of sponsored content pretending to be an article. They throw up so much free anime that it’s worth your while to keep tabs on it, like the entire Build Divers franchise, although some of these works only remain online for a limited time. For the next two weeks, the channel is hosting the Gundam Online Expo which combines limited run screenings as well as exclusive panels about Gundam and Gunpla. There’s a whole bunch of mobile suit fun to be had, but there are two Gundam shows on YouTube now until the end of the month that can’t ignore.
The first of these is Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. As far as Gundam shows go, you wouldn’t necessarily know it was one if it wasn’t for the Zakus and the singular Gundam that shows up in the end. The six-episode OVA revolves around the friendship between a neighborhood kid and young Zeon soldier who’s essentially plotting a terrorist attack amongst the federation. Can the soldier go through with it? How does the kid feel when confronted with realities of this military culture he thinks is so cool?
Also part of the Gundam Online Expo line up is Mobile Suit Gundam 08th Ms Team, albeit the digest Miller’s Report theatrical cut, that many would call the most sophisticated Gundam show of them all. Made during the same creative run from Sunrise that resulted in masterpieces like The Vision of Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop, this band of soldiers story set in the Universal Century remains a favorite amongst Gundam fans and the greater anime community alike. Neither of these shows require you to know much about Gundam, and they’re short enough to not be a daunting investment.
These Gundam shows will be available on the English Gundam.Info channel until the end of August.
