The resurrection of the Gungrave franchise that started with the 2017 VR short experience is nothing I could have never anticipated. An early 2000s sub-cultural artifact now, the series featured two PlayStation 2 games as well as an anime. One aspect that made this series notable was the character design contributions by one Yasuhiro Nightow, the original manga author of both Trigun and Blood Blockade Battlefront. Now, the series is seeing its first full-length game in well over a decade in the form of Gungrave G.O.R.E. which also is bringing back the legendary Nightow for some fresh takes on a classic style.
This Gungrave G.O.R.E trailer is everything fans of the series or just B Action movie fans could want in general. You have a handful of well dressed, overly edgy characters beating the crap out of each other with fine fight choreography might I add. You have Nightow’s signature touches of long coats and chiseled faces. And of course, you have absolutely insane gun-blazing action. This trailer marks the first time we’ve seen gameplay footage for the title and it looks like a blast. Literally. Like Devil May Cry on Steroids, you have bullets flying in every direction and characters pulling out bigger and bigger guns.
I wonder if before Gungrave G.O.R.E actually comes out, which could be next year or years after, we’ll get a remaster of the first two PS2 games. The series was never the most popular so the financial incentive might not be there, but if the powers at be are making this pretty good looking new entry, it wouldn’t hurt to give people a chance to familiarize or re-familiarize themselves with the games first. At this point, I’d wager most people have forgotten about or haven’t even heard of Gungrave.
Gungrave G.O.R.E is coming out sometime in the future.
