As if there wasn’t enough excitement leading into the release of Detective Pikachu next month, this morning proved especially surprising. It was already one thing that Pokémon would be making its Hollywood debut, showcasing once more the links between North America and Japan, but this doubled down on it. Announced today, Tokyo-based hip-hop group HONEST BOYZ® is teaming up with Lil Uzi Vert for Detective Pikachu’s ending theme “ELECTRICITY”.
Officially titled “ELECTRICITY (featuring Lil Uzi Vert)”, the HONEST BOYZ®-performed, Pharrell Williams-produced track is set to turn the film up to 11. Perhaps the best part of it all, the ending will be included in the global release of the film, and despite HONEST BOYZ®’ Japan origins, will be made available worldwide — very cool, Legendary. This isn’t the first time HONEST BOYZ® have worked together with Pharrell Williams and follows on from their late-2018 “TOKYO DIP” single featuring Pharrell Williams.
The announcement comes after a sudden prolonged period of silence from Lil Uzi Vert, as well as his equally sudden return with two new singles, so this is most definitely some welcomed news. To not only have him back but also teaming up with HONEST BOYZ® on something like Detective Pikachu, is a total treat. While I was a bit skeptic about Detective Pikachu when visuals and teasers initially began flying around, it’s fair to say the film has definitely won me over, and I can’t wait to see it on the silver screen.
For those unfamiliar with HONEST BOYZ®, the hip-hop supergroup calls on the immense talents of NAOTO from Sandaime J Soul Brothers, MANDY from EXILE Generations, VERBAL from PKCZ® and m-flo, SWAY from Doberman Infinity, and the legendary NIGO®. If there was ever a group to keep a close eye on, this would definitely have to be it.
Set to hit theaters in North America on May 10, 2019, it’ll be interesting to see just how the world receives Detective Pikachu when it finally drops. For those interested in checking out further details on Detective Pikachu, be sure to head over to the film’s official website.
