Although the Hunter x Hunter manga might have gone back on it’s seemingly unending hiatus, there’s still plenty of fun to be had for fans of the franchise. So, the latest thing on the fanbase’s radar would be the new escape room by SCRAP based on the series, which has just unveiled it’s official website full of new information.
Firstly, it has come to light that escape room will be modeled on the Hunter Exam, which took place way at the beginning of the series and saw Gon, Killua, Kurapika and Leorio battling through the grueling and mind-bending challenges set by the Hunter’s Association so that they could get their hands on a Hunter License. The escape room itself is being presented as part of this year’s ‘Hunter Exam,’ and even in canon it wouldn’t be too unlikely that the exam would include something like this. But the Hunter Exam is tough, so don’t underestimate the escape room – especially when a certain menacing clown seems to be looming over you…
There were lots of things the escape room could have taken as inspiration, but the premise based on the Hunter Exam seems pretty fun, so I’m pretty happy with that choice. What’s also exciting about the escape room is that it won’t just be confined to Tokyo, as so many of these types of things are – it will be coming to five different cities all around the country: Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Sapporo and Fukuoka. So there’s no excuse to go and check it out if you’re a fan of the series, even if you live in the boonies.
The official website for the escape room also has a fun quiz for fans to try out, clearly taking inspiration from quiz that an old lady gives to Gon and his friends as they make their way to the Hunter Exam start point in the series. I must admit, this had me stumped for at least 10 minutes – possibly because Japanese isn’t my mother tongue – but it did give me a good chuckle once I’d work it out. Supposedly, this quiz is for “practicing,” meaning that perhaps the escape room will feature a similar riddle.
Through the website you can also book your tickets, which will net you a special Hunter License USB drive, which not only functions as a handy-dandy storage device but will also let you access the ‘Hunter website,’ alluding to the website that was seen during the Yorknew City arc of the series. I have no idea what is on the website since I haven’t got the USB drive and therefore don’t have access to it, but I’m sure that fans of the series will have a fun time finding out what it is.
The Hunter x Hunter escape room joins the likes of Weekly Shonen Jump manga The Promised Neverland as the latest anime series to get an escape room by SCRAP. It is scheduled to begin at Shinjuku’s ‘Mystery Circus’ in Tokyo on March 9.
