Every now and then a title comes to arcades in Japan that I can’t help but wish was being developed for home consoles and PC. The sort of title that you totally get why it’s coming exclusively to arcades, but at the same time, you can’t help but feel is doing itself a slight injustice by not making itself available on a much broader scale. One such game is Bandai Namco’s upcoming JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Last Survivor, the companies arcade-exclusive battle royale title that looks every bit as ridiculous as you’d expect.
While there’s not a whole lot to be said about the Battle Royale genre at this point, there absolutely is something to say about the sheer quirkiness of a last man standing simulator utilizing the already out-there JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure cast. Rather than this being another survival game that makes the most of guns and various other norms of the genre, in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Last Survivor, you find yourself in an all-out battle between stand users in a 20 person multiplayer arena.
Though OTAQUEST writer Corey got to check out the game in person over at JAEPO 2019, I’ve been left waiting for any actual gameplay footage I could get my hands on — and that’s where the game’s second PV delivered. While it seems like the most common complaint is in regards to the use of Unreal Engine 4, I couldn’t be less phased, especially if the gameplay is as frantic as what we’ve been shown. From Bruno Bucciarati zipping around the map with Sticky Fingers to Jotaro Kujo smashing out the competition with Star Platinum, it definitely seems there’s more than a few gimmicks to separate the title from its competition.
Officially set to release in arcades across Japan during Summer 2019, we’ve seen a number of location tests take place across Japan over the past couple of weeks. Though it’s still a little while until we’ll actually be able to get our hands on the title, I’m excited to give it a go and see how the madness actually controls.
