‘Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress’ Sequel Movie Gets New Trailer, May Release

Key visual

Its been a long time coming, but WIT Studio has finally given us some more information on the upcoming Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress sequel movie. The latest trailer, released yesterday, showcases some more of the film’s story as well as finally giving us a concrete release date of May 10. Check it out below:

The film, titled Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato, is the sequel to the original 2016 series of the same name. It was previously announced that the film would focus on the character of Mumei, and from the trailer, it’s pretty obvious that that is the case – we barely get to see anything of our protagonist Ikoma. Some of the shots featured in the trailer also hint that we’ll get to see some of Mumei’s backstory, which is great news considering that she is by far the most interesting and unique character in the series thus far.

Bar an initial teaser back in October, we haven’t heard much about the sequel film despite it being announced not too long after the first season ended. Many who were looking forward to the story’s continuation were discouraged by this, including myself. The announcement of a new mobile game in the meantime also seemed to indicate that WIT’s focus was elsewhere, along with their continuing adaptation of Attack on Titan.

But I’m glad things seem back on track (no pun intended). Even if the first season’s story was a little bit predictable, WIT’s incredible animation work was reason enough to stick by the show throughout its runtime. Given this, I’m expecting great things from this film, which should benefit from a less chaotic production, thus giving way to higher quality animation cuts. And from the looks of things in this latest trailer, it seems like we won’t be missing out on any of the sakuga goodness that WIT loves to provide.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato is set to open on May 10, joining the likes of Osomatsu-san the Movie and Fujiko Mine’s Lie for a truly stacked May theatrical release window. For more information, please refer to the film’s official website.
