Kousei Eguchi Passes Away at 23, Leaving Behind a Promising Future

Kimio Alive

Shocking news came on Saturday as it was announced that Kimio Alive creator Kousei Eguchi had passed away. Eguchi, 23, was taken suddenly into hospital on August 17 and passed away two days later. This came not one month after he was featured in Oricon, talking about how he strategically used Twitter to ward off cancelation and boost the profile of his debut series. Truly, he was an intelligent and creative artist with a bright future ahead of him. RIP.

The news of Kousei Eguchi’s passing came via the official Kimio Alive Twitter account, where Kodansha released the following statement:

The mangaka Kousei Eguchi was suddenly taken into hospital on August 17, 2020. He passed away two days later at the age of 25.

We cannot begin to express the grief that we feel at the news of his all-too-soon passing.

Kimio Alive, currently serialized in Monthly Shonen Magazine, is a dazzlingly beautiful coming-of-age story that tells the tale of a young boy with many hopes and dreams. He relentlessly pursues them along with his friends.

Kousei Eguchi was a very talented creator who had both the strength and warmth to appeal to his readers and attract a great many fans. He still had many themes and emotions that he wanted to explore, and was in the middle of working hard to do so.

As the editorial department, we had a great deal of expectations for his future. We cannot help but feel a profound sadness at his passing.

A mixture of grief, sadness, and surprise is evident in the replies to the tweet. User @_yuuun15 sums it up perhaps best of all: “I met Kimio Alive through Twitter. I was immediately taken in and bought volume 1, and looked forward to picking up volume 2. I wanted to see KODY’s future and how the story would develop. Thank you very much for creating such a wonderful work.”

The fact that Kousei Eguchi’s passing came at the same time as Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman teaches us a very valuable thing: appreciate your favorite creators; hold them near and dear to your heart, as you never know how much time you have left.

As a young creator with an incredible future ahead of him, we here at OTAQUEST express our sincerest condolences at Kousei Eguchi’s passing. A funeral was already held with attendance from friends and family, and a cause of death was not specified.
