A worldwide collaboration with funding from around the world, including Funimation, will help to bring Falcom’s beloved The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series to animated form. A TV anime based on the games will be released in 2022.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is perhaps the most beloved subseries within the Legend of Heroes franchise. Since the first installment was released in 2013, and a further three sequels after that, the game explores a story centered on two warring groups, the Four Great Houses and the Reformists. In the first game, the story followed Rean Schwarzer and Class VII at Thors Military Academy, a newly formed class at the school in the military country of Erobonia.
Now, the Trails of Cold Steel video game series will be turned into an anime.
This new anime won’t be adapting the story of the games, however. It will tell an all-original story that runs concurrently with the first game and is set in the Western part of the Zemuria continent. Beyond that, we admittedly know very little about the upcoming anime. What we do know is that it’s aiming for a 2022 TV premiere. The studio handling the project has not been announced, never mind a cast or staff list.
The anime will be produced by four companies, with a mix of domestic and international companies involved in funding the project. Most well known is Funimation, who are placing themselves on the production committee alongside UserJoy Technology, a game company responsible for handling Falcom properties in Asian markets such as Taiwan. Osaka-based IP investment SYOU are also involved alongside NADA Holdings.
While it’s difficult to judge an anime based on the little information given in this announcement, it is exciting all the same that Falcom’s beloved Trails of Cold Steel will hit TV screens in some form soon.
