With Super Mario 3D World releasing on Nintendo Switch next month with an all-new expansion, Nintendo have released a brand-new trailer detailing the contents of Bowser’s Fury and giving fans an idea of what to expect from this expanded version of Mario’s most underrated 3D platformer.
Having languished on Wii U as a result of the console’s poor sales and being overlooked for not being an open-world 3D platformer like its predecessors or Odyssey, Super Mario 3D World is set to receive a second-chance at the limelight with the upcoming release of the Wii U game on Nintendo Switch. Last night, Nintendo confirmed a new trailer would be released today detailing the mysterious expansion the game would come bundled with, titled Bowser’s Fury. This trailer, now released, showcases a brand new area of the game that brings the gameplay of 3D World into an expanded, open environment.
The new trailer for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury opens with the mysterious bell Mario had once been stood in front of transforming into a giant cat bell. By the end of the trailer we see this allows Mario to turn into a giant lion to fight off Bowser, setting up a potential end-of-expansion fight and final boss. As for the rest of the content, it’s best to interpret this not as additional Super Mario 3D World content and instead as a new expansion to Super Mario Odyssey, taking advantage of 3D World mechanics.
Movement around the open world takes more cues from Odyssey than it does the game it’s being packaged with, even if rotating platforms, catsuits, invisible platforms, and more make their return from 3D World in this new area. More surprisingly, Bowser Jr will act as a companion on this adventure, with areas of the trailer showing the potential for co-op gameplay with a second player as they control Bowser Jr in order to attack enemies and reveal bonuses hidden in the walls.
While those wanting more content in the style of Super Mario 3D World may be disappointed that this expansion takes more inspiration from Odyssey, this still looks enjoyable with a lot of unique ideas, and is free with base game. As this trailer notes, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will launch on Nintendo Switch on 12 February.
