There’s no questioning the statement that Metal Gear Solid for PlayStation 1 had a massively profound impact on gaming as a medium upon its original release in 1998. The fallout that surrounded the most recent Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain may have impacted the way its publisher Konami, as well as the series in general, is viewed in the eyes of its fans, but it would be unfair to suggest that this isn’t a series many still adore and hold fond memories for. The property is still well regarded and popular, and a new experience away from the world of video games may be just what its fans want.
In partnership with IDW Games, and designed by Emerson Matsuuchi, that new experience is exactly what fans will get. Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game is a brand new, fully co-operative board game following the story of the PS1 classic. Playable characters include Solid Snake himself, as well as Metal Silverburgh, Dr. Hal ‘Otacon’ Emmerich and Grey Fox, while the game itself, thanks to an AI system and sandbox gameplay, can play out in multiple ways. Brand new art will be provided by illustrator Kenneth Loh with miniature figurines provided by sculptor Francesco Orrù.
Although the game will be following the story of the original game, there will be multiple campaign scenarios for players to work through. Estimated gameplay for any of these campaigns is 60 minutes when being played with 1-4 players. The board game is set for release on an unspecified date in 2019 and looks set to be a unique way to experience the story and gameplay of the original PlayStation 1 title in a new form, definitely positioning it as something that might just be worth looking into.
