Off-White designer Virgil Abloh and Undercover designer Jun Takahashi have teamed up to collaborate on a line of clothing they’re calling “UNDEROFFWHITECOVERS”. The line will be comprised of streetwear that both of the designers have infused their respective distinct styles into. The collection will be available from September 14.
Included in the “UNDEROFFWHITECOVERS” collection is a selection of eight different pieces, including t-shirts, hoodies, shorts, denim pants, and a waist-bag. Undercover’s founder Jun Takahashi re-imagined Off-White’s logo and infused his own branding into it. The collection is covered in dark, almost gothic imagery that Takahashi is calling “Dark Matter”. The edgy motif perpetuates both Off-White’s vision and Jun Takahashi’s tendency to insert a strong artistic message into his designs. For this collaboration, a campaign visual created by Undercover Production was also produced. It shows iconic 90’s variety show stars Naoto Takenaka and Eri Fuse donning the same haircuts and wearing matching outfits from the collaboration.
Off-White was founded in 2013 by Virgil Abloh, who, since 2018, has been the artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s men’s wear collection. The reveal of the “UNDEROFFWHITECOVERS” collaboration comes just days after Off-White’s Virgil Abloh announced his doctor-ordered a 3-month break from life. This means he’ll miss his own Off-White SS20 show, which is scheduled for September 26 in Paris, but that doesn’t mean the show won’t go on. Abloh is quoted saying “My Off-White team is equipped to handle this – the show will go on.”
Jun Takahashi started his fashion label Undercover while he was still studying at Bunka Fashion College back in 1990. Takahashi quickly gained an association with the branding genius Nigo and his former brand A Bathing Ape, which resulted in him launching his fashion brand at a store called Nowhere that was founded in 1993. Undercover’s designs come off as punk at first glance, but Jun Takahashi aims to interpret culture through his work.
