The release of the long-awaited Evangelion 3.0+1.0 anime film is gradually approaching, and we’ve seen a ton of collaborations lately hyping up the movie. This time, Phantasy Star Online 2 is putting Eva‘s characters into the world of their game, officially kicking off their Evangelion collaboration campaign in Japan this winter.
The trailer shows us a sneak peek of what the Evangelion overhaul is going to look like. The plug suit-wearing trio Asuka, Rei, Shinji have been turned into lively Phantasy Star Online 2 characters, and we see Misato has gotten the 3D makeover as well. The iconic purple Unit-01 is shown wielding the Lance of Longinus, and apparently will be stationed in the game’s lobby. Players will be able to fight against the 6th Angel, Ramiel, as a special event boss. The ARKS Ship, where the game’s lobby is contained, will be attacked by the 6th Angel Ramiel, and players will have the chance to fight against the Evangelion series’ geometric bad boy. 6th Angel Ramiel’s transformations look so cool in the game, it’s almost like he belongs in PSO2. We don’t currently know the full details of the collaboration, but based on the trailer, it promises to be an in-game event worth getting excited over.
The Evangelion 3.0+1.0 animated film is set to release in June 2020. A pretty long clip of the first 10 minutes of the movie was shown earlier this year at an anime convention in France, giving us a really tantalizing taste of the film we Eva fans have been eagerly awaiting for since its initial announcement date in 2014. The film was originally set to come out in 2015, but director Hideaki Anno delayed the film’s release several times. During this period of waiting, a ton of hype has built up around the film, including the controversial English release of the original Evangelion series on Netflix. I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ll see of Evangelion collaborations over the coming months, so I’ll be sure to keep an eye out.
