Pokémon Go Will Have ‘Love Cup’ Battles For Valentine’s Day

Pokémon Go Love Cup Visual

Pokémon Go players just received a little Valentine’s Day gift from Niantic. Starting on 8 February, certain red and pink Pokémon can battle in the Love Cup. This is an international event, although the Japanese name somehow sounds cuter: Love Love Cup (Rabu Rabu Kappu). The cup will continue through 15 February, the day after Valentine’s Day.

‘Time to show us your love for battle’ says the English-language announcement, which was tweeted out by the @PokémonGOApp account on Tuesday (Pacific Time).

The Love Love Cup is part of GO Battle League Season 6, which began in November. New leagues within season 6 are continuing to start this year.

Love Rules in This Love Cup

The event is limited to Pokémon with 1,500 CP or less. Legendary and Mythical Pokémon aren’t allowed to battle. There’s a huge list of Pokémon which are eligible, some of which are more orange than red, but sure, why not? For example, the first name on the list is Charmander, followed by evolved forms Charmeleon and Charizard. But I guess his flaming tail is red.

More thematically appropriate would be the very pink Clefairy, Clefable, Jigglypuff, and Wigglytuff. Or you could go into battle with Voltorb (aka not a PokéBall with eyes) or Electrode. The heart-shaped Pokémon shown in the Twitter message is Luvdisc, and it is definitely eligible if you have caught it. (I haven’t.)

Interestingly, while Mr. Mime, Darumaka, and Darmanitan are eligible to battle, the Galarian versions of those Pokémon are not. They’re not red or pink (Or even orange!). It’s not clear if shiny versions will be eligible to battle or not, since the color changes.

We haven’t heard yet if there will be special badges for participating in the Pokémon Go Love Cup, or what the awards will be for winning battles.
