We first heard about the iOS game FANTASIAN all the way back at the beginning of 2019 when Apple announced their Apple Arcade service for iOS devices. Since then, there have been little to no updates about the title, and many even wondered if it is still in development. This all changed at the end of 2019 when Famitsu had the chance to sit down with Mistwalker head Hironobu Sakaguchi where he stated that the game is ‘nearing completion’ and will be hitting devices in 2021. Today, Hironobu Sakaguchi took to Twitter to share a screenshot from the upcoming Apple Arcade title. You can check out a small bit of it in the Apple Arcade Reveal trailer below at about 1:14.
By Hironobu Sakaguchi’s own words, FANTASIAN is a game that ‘shouldn’t exist’. All the game levels are built by hand as a diorama, photographed, rendered in 3D with 3D characters placed on the field. It truly is a work of art. The game is being developed by Mistwalker, a studio that has had a fair amount of success with their games Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Terra Battle. For the last three years, the team has been hard at work on FANTASIAN and it seems that we will be able to get our hands on it soon.
The screenshot that Sakaguchi shared on his Twitter today normally wouldn’t be anything to write home about, but if you look closely, you can see just how detailed the world is and I would be remiss to say that it looks amazingly lifelike. The world that is surrounding the character looks just as if you were to be on your hands and knees and looking at the dirt surrounding you. FANTASIAN should be hitting iOS devices sometime this year, and with Sakaguchi himself actually talking about the title, I would be surprised if it wasn’t before the first half of the year is over.
