The beginning of a new week can only mean one thing: time for new Weekly Shonen Jump! This is where Jacob investigates the latest and greatest in the magazine, telling you what’s worth your time and what’s not. You can find coverage of other series under the tag Jump Time. Here’s Sakamoto Days chapter 17.
Heisuke Mashimo is the latest assassin to try his hand at earning the massive bounty on Sakamoto’s head in Sakamoto Days chapter 17, but you can’t help but feel sorry for him: he’s down on his luck, trying to provide for his best bird friend Piisuke, and lacks a bit of critical thinking.
When he first goes to the Sakamoto family store in the opening pages of Sakamoto Days chapter 17, he doesn’t even realize that the guy in the wanted picture is the guy standing right in front of him, just with a couple of pounds piled on top. Sakamoto’s bluff that he ‘just work[s] here’ and that ‘we have lots of locations’ actually works on him, making it clear that he’s pretty damn stupid. Shin even remarks that ‘Reading his mind is a total waste of energy’ since his thoughts are so vacant.
Nevertheless, Sakamoto Days chapter 17 isn’t a poorly constructed story. Far from it: Sakamoto and Shen’s motivation intersect with Heisuke’s, making for a surprisingly compelling narrative. Given how many assassins are coming to the store and attacking daily, it’s in pretty bad shape, but an airsoft tournament held annually at the local shopping center with a grand prize of 1 million yen (about $9000 USD) might just offer the answer.
The only problem is that it also does for Heisuke, who hopes to use the money to get out of poverty and maybe finally get an apartment. Shin and Sakamoto probably thought that they could steamroll everyone and win some easy money, but fate has other ideas: they get paired up with Heisuke on a technicality, and Lu (who has taken up the habit of being drunk 24/7 to boost her martial arts prowess) calls Sakamoto’s name and thus reveals his identity. Sakamoto Days chapter 17 ends with the two characters facing off.
It remains to be seen just how this conflict will be settled next week, but it’d be nice if Heisuke stuck around and became part of the growing cast of characters. If Sakamoto employed him like Lu and Shin, that’d give him a little bit of money to sort his life out, and keep his unique charms around for the foreseeable future. Plus, they do need a competent marksman!
