Sega Announces the Game Gear Micro

Fresh at the start of their 60th-anniversary festivities, SEGA has announced today that they will be breathing new life into their historical Game Gear portable console and releasing a smaller version of it called the “Game Gear Micro”.

The hardware is essentially a 1 to 1 copy of the original Game Gear which was released back in 1990 albeit, smaller. A lot smaller. The console is intended to fit completely in the palm of an adult hand, while still retaining the color screen, the control layout, as well as onboard memory to store the pre-installed games.

SEGA announced that the Game Gear Micro will be hitting store shelves in 4 colors (Black, Blue, Yellow, and Red) on October 6th, 2020, with pre-orders being available in the coming days at Amazon, Rakuten Books, and the SEGA Store. If you pre-order all four colors, you will be gifted a micro version of the Game Gear Big Window.

Considering how small the device is, the game lineup is quite impressive and will certainly hit that nostalgia factor for a lot of gamers from the early 90s who had an affinity for SEGA and their products. The games included on the Game Gear Micro are different between the 4 colorways, and are:

Black:

  • Sonic The Hedgehog
  • Puyo Puyo 2
  • OutRun
  • Royal Stone

Blue:

  • Sonic and Tails
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • SylvanTale
  • Baku Baku Animal

Yellow:

  • Shining Force
  • Shining Force 2
  • Shining Force Gaiden
  • Nazopuyo Aruru no Ruu

Red:

  • Shin Megami Tensei Gaiden – Last Bible
  • Shin Megami Tensei Gaiden – Last Bible Special
  • The GG-nin
  • Columns

I am really honestly quite surprised at this announcement. This is not something that I was expecting SEGA to do. Sure I expected them to continue with the miniaturization of their past consoles, but I never expected them to do a micro version of the Game Gear.

Thinking about that as a SEGA fan over the years, it’s a really awesome concept and it goes to show that SEGA definitely cares whole-heartedly about their fanbase and their lineage. The Game Gear Micro will be going on sale on October 6th for a retail price of ¥4,980 each, there has yet to be an announcement for a US release for the Game Gear Micro.
