This is going to sound a bit biased, but in my eyes, there are no sports anime or manga better than SLAM DUNK. There is just something about the series that really makes it shine in my book, and I can’t really put my finger on it. SLAM DUNK is touted as one of the best anime and manga series of all time and today, but with the chance of sheer luck, Toei Animation went and did the unthinkable: They announced that SLAM DUNK will be getting a movie. Even better, it’s not a live-action movie, it is an anime movie.

For those of you who may be too young to know about SLAM DUNK, let me give you a bit of a rundown: it is a Japanese sports manga series written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue, about a basketball team from Shohoku High School in the Shonan area of Japan. It was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump between October 1990 to June 1996. The manga also received the anime series treatment, garnering a total of 101 episodes produced by Toei Animation and directed by Nobutaka Nishizawa.
There are little to no details about the upcoming SLAM DUNK movie as it was just announced today, but you can be sure that with the popularity of the series, we’re likely to hear something sooner rather than later. The good news is that the original creator behind the series, Takehiko Inoue, is also onboard for the movie. Toei Animation also registered an official Twitter account for the movie and opened a teaser site which doesn’t really contain anything as of now.
Hopefully, as we progress further into 2021, we’ll get a solid release date and a brief synopsis of what the SLAM DUNK anime movie is going to be about.
