SPINNS Calls on Masakazu Katsura’s Legendary I”s Manga for Collaborative Collection

SPINNS Calls on Masakazu Katsura’s Legendary I

It’s a good day for content, as it turns out; just this morning I found myself writing about the latest installment in TV Tokyo’s Video Girl Ai live-action drama. Now I get to write about another one of Masakazu Katsura’s incredible works. When it comes to my favorite manga, it’s a pretty close tie between both Video Girl Ai and I”s, both penned by Katsura. So when it was announced this week that Harajuku-born fast fashion brand SPINNS would be calling on the visuals of I”s for a new collaborative collection, I was pretty excited. Now that I’ve actually got my eyes on all of the pieces, well, let’s see how they fare:

Alright, so the majority of these are some legitimately sweet pieces, but there are some very clear flaws. I’m all for the current reverse-side graphic trend, but unfortunately, there are certain pieces in this collection that take it too far. Not so much that I’m not still swooed into picking them up, but definitely a few typical pitfalls of fast fashion. For example, you’ve got these clean color-altered images from the original manga on the back. Very nice. Then you look at the front, and there’s just a quote printed on the chest that doesn’t need to be there. Jumping to the long-sleeve shirts, we’re faced with a similar problem. Sweet panel selections and color alterations, not so great additions. Sleeve designs are passable at their best, but these just feel unnecessary.

As I mentioned, none of this is enough to prevent me from picking up some of these pieces. I’m a total sucker for this sort of stuff, especially given the series is 22-years-old, I’ll take what I can work with. Pre-orders for all of the pieces are set to open up on April 6 at midday and run until April 12. Most pieces are gonna run you around 3,000 yen, with long-sleeves hitting you for around 4,100 yen. If you’re a fan of the series, this is definitely worth checking out, despite the aforementioned flaws. Further details over on SPINNS’ official website.
