Square Enix’s ‘Project Athia’ Gets a New Trailer and Official Name

Forspoken Project Athia

Anytime a trailer opens up with someone saying ‘Is that a mother fucking dragon’, you know that the game is going to be good. Back when the PlayStation 5 was initially shown off, Square Enix had a small trailer for a game called Project Athia which sent the internet into a frenzy trying to figure out what it was. Was it Final Fantasy XVI? Was Agni’s Philosophy finally getting an actual game? No one knew, but what everyone knew and felt together was that the game was absolutely gorgeous.

Today, we got some new info about the game. First, it is now known as Forspoken. The name ‘Forspoken’ was actually found a few months ago for a trademark filing that Square Enix had applied for, but everyone thought at the time that it was the name of the next Final Fantasy XIV expansion.

Ella Balinska is playing the role of the protagonist of Forspoken, Frey Holland, a young woman who must harness her magical abilities to survive in a fantastical and dangerous land called Athia. Watching the trailer, you can see just how beautiful a world Square Enix’s in-house production studio LUMINOUS PRODUCTIONS has been able to create. Seeing Frey zip through the landscapes and summon magic at her whim is satisfyingly beautiful and really has that ‘Next-gen’ feeling.

Forspoken Project Athia

There is still no release date yet for Forspoken aside from 2022, but we do know that it is coming to PlayStation 5 and PC. Until then, we have Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERGRADE to hold us over and the upcoming PlayStation 5 release of Final Fantasy XIV. I think those two alone should get us to 2022 in a pretty safe fashion, right?
