Studio Ghibli movies are picturesque, and it’s easy to be lost in the backgrounds and worlds of any of their films. Whether it be the rural Japan of movies like My Neighbor Totoro or the beautiful towns of films like Kiki’s Delivery Service, the movies are beloved as much for their visual splendor as they are for their content. Studio Ghibli have chosen to upload a slew of high-quality HD screenshots from 8 of their films to be used as desktop wallpapers and more, with screenshots from the rest of their films on the way later.
Whether you want to use these HD Studio Ghibli screenshots for wallpapers, to create a college or whatever, as long as these images are used ‘within the bounds of common sense’ (in other words, don’t try and make money from these images), anyone is free to use these images however they like. These include many iconic scenes 8 beloved Ghibli productions:
- When Marnie Was There
- The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
- The Wind Rises
- From Up on Poppy Hill
- The Secret World of Arrietty
- Ponyo
- Tales from Earthsea
- Spirited Away
This makes a bumper crop of 400 images being shared for free and fair use by Studio Ghibli. Eventually, the company plan to share 50 images from all of their remaining films, making this just the first batch. I’m not complaining about the films chosen first, as some of my favorite Ghibli features like When Marnie Was There, The Secret World of Arrietty and more are in this set, and even if we need to wait longer for older films like my all-time favorites Kiki’s Delivery Service and Whisper of the Heart, it’s wonderful to see the company open to sharing these images from their culture-defining films for free with the public.
Whether for desktop wallpapers or however you wish to use these images, you can find these HD Studio Ghibli screenshots over on their official website.
