The Ultimate Detective Conan Movie Guide

Detective Conan (aka Case Closed) has enjoyed far-reaching success in terms of both manga and anime sales. Although the franchise is loved in Japan and across several Asian countries, a small, but loyal fanbase has built up in the West as well. With any profitable franchise, producing movies out of the property is inevitable. 

Since its debut anime in 1996, Detective Conan has released around 24 theatrical movies and counting every year. These movies have been profitable at the Japanese box office and are a perennial contender for the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, and enjoy financial and critical success from both critics and audiences alike. 

A select few titles are now or have been available to watch in North America. OTAQUEST has a detailed guide to help you jump into the franchise’s many movies. Each Detective Conan movie has its own unique story involving Conan and the gang trying to solve a mystery, usually bigger than what you would find in a Detective Conan episode list.

Taking place between episodes 54 and 55 in the original TV series, The Time Bombed Skyscraper follows Conan as he engages with a dangerous mastermind who has planted several bombs across the city. His frantic search culminates in a climactic confrontation at the large Beika City Building skyscraper. 

The Fourteenth Target (1998)

Conan hunts down a mysterious person attacking people associated with the names of a deck of cards. The case is connected to Ran’s father, Kogoro Mouri, and her mother, Eri, who was involved in a past incident. As Conan’s investigation continues and more victims are put at risk, he slowly uncovers the secret behind Kogoro’s past and divorce from Eri.

Elusive gentleman thief Kaitou Kid tells the police that he’ll steal a recently discovered Russian Faberge Egg from the Suzuki Modern Art Museum. Conan and fellow rival detective Hatori Heiji plan to stop him before he strikes. He must also investigate a series of murders that have occurred, leading to Conan discovering a tragic truth.

Ran Mouri is inadvertently involved in a string of murders and witnesses the culprit in another attempted act. Traumatized as a result of the incident, she becomes amnesiac and loses her memories of Conan, her family, and friends. Worried for her safety, Conan investigates what happened and tries to stop the culprit, who is now targeting Ran’s life. 

Countdown to Heaven (2001)

A new Twin Tower building is built in Beika City and dubbed ‘the closest thing to heaven.’ Meanwhile, the employees who worked on the building are murdered one by one in the lead up to the grand opening party. Additionally, the secretive Black Organization is also on the hunt for their missing colleague, Shiho Miyano, who now goes by Ai Haibara. With the culprit still free, Conan’s investigations lead to a final showdown at the Twin Towers. 

Interestingly, while the plot of this movie has some similarities to 9/11, it is coincidental because the movie was released in April 2001 with the production work most likely done some time prior. 

The Phantom of Baker Street (2002)

Conan and The Detective Boys are invited along with several other children to participate in a virtual reality game called Noah’s Ark. They’re transported to a simulated Victorian era England where the presence of Sherlock Holmes and Jack the Ripper are known. Things take a dark turn when the kids find themselves trapped in the game as their parents look on in horror. Now tasked with completing the game and solving the mystery, Conan must use his wits to escape with his friends.

Conan and Hattori Heiji team up to solve a series of burglaries and murders in Kyoto. Their investigation leads to a confrontation between them and a group of masked antique robbers. As the case deepens and they find more clues, Hattori can’t help but remember a little girl he met at a temple nearby when he was little.

A stage actress named Julie tasks Mouri Kogoro with protecting a valuable star sapphire after receiving a letter from magician thief Kaito Kid. The situation turns dire when Conan and the gang are embroiled in a poisoning case aboard an airliner. Both Conan and Kaito Kid team up to take control of the plane and find the perpetrator.

Conan, Ran, Mouri, and friends are invited by Sonoko on a luxurious sea cruise. Everything goes great until they’re involved in a dangerous plot of revenge connecting a shipbuilder and a past shipwreck. With nowhere else to go, Conan works with Mouri to solve the case and find the culprit behind the crime.

Conan, Mouri, Ran, and the Detective Boys are invited by a mysterious client to an amusement park called Miracle Land. As they’re enjoying their time, Mouri and Conan are tasked with solving a cold case, realizing that their closest friend and family are hostages until they’re able to do so. With the help of Hatori Heiji and Kaitou Kid, Conan must race against time and bring the culprit to justice before it’s too late.

Conan and friends visit the beautiful island of Koumi for summer vacation. There, they learn of the local legend of a treasure left by pirates Anne Bonnie and Mary Reed in a ruin called the Seabed Palace. Soon after, two scuba divers are murdered amidst a series of robberies. Conan soon realizes that there are suspicious treasure hunters after that lost fortune. Seeking justice for their crimes, Conan and friends engage in a treasure hunt and a mad chase for the perpetrators.

They later learn that both are being targeted by a serial killer after several students of his music school have been murdered. Wealthy businessman Jirokichi Suzuki invites his niece, Sonoko, Conan, and several of her friends aboard the world’s largest airship. He has issued a challenge to Kaitou Kid to try to steal the heralded Lady of the Sky jewel on the ship. The situation changes, suddenly, when a mysterious terrorist organization called the Red Siamese Cat hijacks the air carrier, threatening to release a deadly virus on their hostages. With the help of his friends and Kid, Conan must outwit the terrorists and save everyone on board the airship.

The Governor of Tokyo is threatened with a letter stating that a subway tunnel will be bombed with explosives. Conan and the Detective Boys learn of this and rush to stop the incident, avoiding any further disturbance or death. Soon after, he learns the incident may be connected to a recently constructed dam in the snowy town of Kitanosawa in Niigata prefecture. As Conan and friends travel to the relocated town, he must investigate the truth of the bombing incident and stop the culprit’s next attack.

Conan and the Detective Boys are off to watch a match between two great Japanese soccer clubs: the Tokyo Spirits and Gamba Osaka. After meeting their favorite players, Conan waits patiently for the game to start. Unfortunately, he learns that there’s a timed bomb set to go off within the stadium. With the help of the police and the Detective Boys, Conan rushes to find the bomb and the culprit behind it. 

This movie was a collaboration with Japan’s J. League Division 1 teams which celebrated their 20th anniversary. Real players from the J. League teams voiced their respective selves in the movie and certain scenes even used crowd noises from the 2012 Japanese Super Cup.

Conan, Ran, and friends get the chance to board a state-of-the-art military Aegis vessel with the Self Defense Force. While going through the vessel’s tour, Conan discovers a corpse with a missing left arm and realizes a spy has infiltrated their group. Ran is put in danger and Conan must find out the identity of the spy, who goes by the codename X.

The Tokyo Police and FBI are on the hunt for a mysterious sniper from the military who is targeting one of their own. One of Ran’s friends, Masumi Sera, is shot in the crossfire and Conan resolves himself to find the mysterious sniper with the help of FBI agent Jodie Starling. With the sniper dead set on his target, it’s up to Conan to stop their killings and apprehend them.

Phantom thief Kaitou Kid has announced his intention to steal a new art piece from Vincent Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflower’ series at an auction Conan, Sonoko, and friends are attending. The new piece claims to be authentic, but has striking similarities to a Japanese piece in the same style. Sonoko’s grandfather, Jirokichi, buys the painting nonetheless and awaits Kaitou Kid’s appearance. It’s up to Conan to once again find the imposter in his group and foil Kid’s plans.

After a spy from the Black Organization infiltrates the Japanese National Police agency and steals sensitive documents, she is chased and shot during the ensuing pursuit. Waking up near the Tohto Aquarium, she doesn’t remember who she is and meets Conan and friends soon after. They’re determined to help the woman over her case of amnesia to regain her memories. Meanwhile, Vermouth from the Black Organization observes from the background and informs her boss, Gin, to move in if necessary. 

Crimson Love Letter (2017)

Set in Kyoto, the story follows Conan and Hattori Heiji, whose childhood friend, Kazuha, is entered into the Satsuki Cup, a nationwide karuta competition. Then, a bombing incident occurs and Conan manages to keep both Hattori and Kazuha from danger. Simultaneously, the reigning champion is murdered and their body is discovered, along with several karuta cards sprawled all over. Additionally, a mysterious girl meets claims to be Heiji’s fiancée. As they balance these new revelations, Conan and Heiji must work together to find the culprit and stop their wave of crimes.

An explosion rocks the Tokyo Summit’s Edge of Ocean facility center and Mouri Kogoro is arrested as a prime suspect. They discover that Toru Amuro, an agent of the NPA Security Bureau and publicly known as Mouri’s apprentice ‘Rei Furuya,’ is somehow involved with the incident and interferes with Conan’s investigation to clear Mouri’s name. It’s up to Conan to prove Mouri Kogoro’s innocence, find the real culprit, and uncover Amuro’s motive.

Conan, Ran, Mouri, and Sonoko are visiting the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore to cheer on Sonoko’s boyfriend, Makoto, at an international karate tournament. Simultaneously, the world’s most magnificent blue sapphire, the ‘Blue Lapis Fist,’ is displayed at a nearby exhibition. Soon after, a murder takes place and, at the crime scene, a bloody Kaitou Kid announcement card is found. With the safety of Ran, Sonoko, and Makoto in jeopardy, Conan must find the culprit while stopping Kaitou Kid in from stealing the jewel.

The Scarlet Bullet (2021)

Tokyo is hosting the World Sports Games (WSG) and celebrating the occasion by having a superior bullet train dock into a newly built subway station. As Conan and the gang watch in anticipation, the sponsors of the games are suddenly kidnapped in quick succession. Undercover FBI agent Akai Shuichi watches this incident unfold in the background as the FBI monitors the event closely. Conan deduces that these kidnappings are connected to another WSG event 15 years ago and realizes the FBI may be hiding a secret.   

This Detective Conan movie was originally scheduled to premiere last April to commemorate the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Summer Games. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was delayed to April 2021, marking the first year without a Detective Conan movie. It’s also the first movie in the series released in the Reiwa era. 

The Scarlet Bullet is also the first movie in the franchise to be released simultaneously in English, Korean, Japanese, and German. Despite there being an English dub available for the movie, no formal release in the United States and Canada has been announced yet.
