This new track is quite the interesting collaboration we have on our hands and one I never would have expected. TK From Ling Tosite Sigure, the full phrase being the name of TK’s solo project, has seen quite a lot of success this decade both on his own and in his original Ling Tosite Sigure, sometimes romanized Rin Toshite Shigure. In the sub-culture world alone, ‘Unravel’ from Tokyo Ghoul is one of the biggest anime songs of the decade (I’ve seen Tik Toks using it literally today) and he’s the genius behind, as well as having done music for Psycho-Pass and other series. For his newest single ‘Melt’, he’s tapped one of our favorites; Suis, the vocalist from Yorushika.
While the TK From Ling Tosite Sigure project has always been a little more hook oriented than Ling Tosite Sigure, this is the most pop I’ve ever heard him. TK’s known equally for his piercing, winding vocals and his intricate bordering on math-rock style guitar that both played a huge part in him and his band getting noticed in the first place. Here, there’s not even a proper riff until the last leg of the track. That said Suis from Yorushika’s soaring soft vocals make a nice contrast with TK’s pointed singing, and it gives the track a unique hallmark.
I originally discovered Ling Tosite Sigure shortly before my first trip to Japan in 2012. Truthfully, it wasn’t even through any of their mainstream hits but rather the general online music nerd community that pointed them my way. I listened to the hell of their album ‘just A moment’ walking around Tokyo for the first time, so it’s become a sentimental release. Years later, I’m happy to see ‘TK From Ling Tosite Sigure’ finding mainstream success which currently now goes beyond his anime song work. He’s been in the game along time and stands out from a lot of other J-Rockers out there. Good on him for collaborating with Yorushika too.
TK From Ling Tosite Sigure’s ‘Melt’ has been released as a digital single.
