2001 meets 2019 on this absolutely wild little tune. We have an unlikely meeting of two of the most unique people in music on ‘Bingo Party’. Being a song for Sega’s upcoming Sonic Team Racing, it’s not a surprise Jun Senoue slams riffs on the track. Composing music for Sonic games for decades, he’s the genius behind “Live & Learn”, “City Escape”, and you know, the classics. The more out of left field, but completely welcome, addition is TORIENA; an unstoppable riot in the Japanese music scene. If you weren’t already sure. This. Song. GOES.
The track itself clocks in at just under a minute and a half. Maybe the game will contain a longer recording. Even if it doesn’t, the 90-second ‘Bingo Party’ jams a lot of fun and personality into its short run time. Technically a reimagining of a Sonic Heroes song; Bubbly, high speed, an absolute earworm, ‘Bingo Party’ plays as exactly what you’d want from a Sonic The Hedgehog track. Jun Senoue’s goes for slower, chunkier guitar melodies on this one and it pairs really well TORIENA’s UP IN YOUR FACE chaotic non-stop 8-bit barrage. It’s classic chiptune TORIENA on the song, no vocals on the cut.
You can say what you want about the games, about the fandom, about the design nobody seems to like for the upcoming live-action movie. But one thing Sonic’s always had from the beginning to now is good music. From a certain king of pop in the Genesis days to Akon on the notorious Sonic The Hedgehog 2006, Sega’s been no stranger to bringing in established musicians to create music for the old hedgehog. TORIENA’s a great choice and perfect fit. Hoping to see more left-field collaborations from this and future Sonic games.
