TRIGGER just announced SSSS.DYNAZENON, a new show by Akira Amemiya in collaboration with Tsuburaya. As the name suggests, the show will take place in the SSSS.GRIDMAN universe, likely serving as a spin-off series of some sort. The show was announced at this weekend’s Tsuburaya Convention 2019.
NOTE: The following teaser contains spoilers for SSSS.GRIDMAN
It is no surprise that Akira Amemiya is at the helm of the project once again after the success of SSSS.GRIDMAN, alongside character designer Masaru Sakamoto, screenwriter Keiichi Hasegawa, and music by Shiro Sagisu (Neon Genesis Evangelion).
The teaser recaps a number of iconic moments before laying eyes on the all-new DYNAZENON. Amemiya has clearly drawn inspiration from more mechanical designs over traditional tokusatsu suits just like he did in SSSS.GRIDMAN, prepping us for round two of the director’s unique spin on the genre.
The bestial design of the DYNAZENON suggests at a completely different tone for the series than it’s predecessor. More closely resembling something like Guts’ helmet from berserk that anything we have seen in the previous series, it’s not clear what kind of wild ride SSSS.DYNAZENON will take us on.
The name Dynazenon hints at a combination of God Zenon and Dyna Dragon, Gridman’s allies from the original tokusatsu series. Given that Zenon made an appearance in SSSS.GRIDMAN as Powered Zenon in the form of the max-upgraded Gridman, the visuals suggest that Dynazenon is a new character entirely.
Hijacking the SSSS.GRIDMAN twitter and overhauling it to @SSSS_Project, there seems to be a promising future for Amemiya’s take on the Gridman Universe. Just like with any long-running tokusatsu, this may hint at a plan to extend the Gridman Universe further into the future than SSSS.GRIDMAN and SSSS.DYNAZENON.
SSSS.DYNAZENON was fortunate enough to get its own website instead of just another hand-me-down from SSSS.GRIDMAN, however, the website does not currently hold any additional information.
