I’m going to need all of you reading this to throw your hands up in the air and give us your energy, like a Goku type spirit bomb situation, so we can get this one localized. At TGS, Sega’s announced they’re bundling three classic Virtual-On games from 1995 thru 2001 for a Playstation 4 exclusive collection. For now, it’s a Japan-only release set to come out November 27 but we’re hoping Sega will throw English speaking audiences a bone on this one eventually. Aside from the Index / Railgun crossover that materialized out of nowhere, the franchise had been mostly dead for a long time. Even if a full big-budget new entry isn’t on the horizon, we’d like to see the collection made available to all.
The full title for this collection is Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Masterpiece 1995-2001. It includes the first game in the series, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On from 1995. ’98’s Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Orario Tangram is also a part of the collection, though the version in this collection is the 2000 Dreamcast port. Finally, we have Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Force. I imagine these games will be properly remastered; Sega’s already confirmed online capability for all three games.
I actually never got to play any game in the series until the original was included in Yakuza Kiwami 2 as one of its playable arcade games. While compared to modern games it’s arguably a little clunky, all the fun and charm was still there. Mecha games have unfortunately not been so prominent this decade as before, although we did just get Daemon x Machina for the Switch. While I don’t expect a collection like this to revitalize the genre, at least those who are interested in this niche sub-category of games can once again play to their heart’s content.
The Cyber Troopers Virtual-On Masterpiece 1995-2001 hits Japanese PS4s November 27.
